No Bull Nutrition Mini Challenge-Day 16- Estimating Portions

Estimating Portions

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to guess how much your food weighs? Life happens and estimating portions is an important skill to learn. It is nearly impossible to be able to control how your food is prepared 100% of time but I want you to feel equipped with the skills necessary to estimate your portions. Being able to estimate as accurately as possible will help you from falling completely off track. Remember, it is always better to estimate than to throw your plan completely out the window.

Today we will specifically talk about how to estimate portions using only your hands:

  • 1 cup-your fistEstimating Portions
  • 1 ounce– meaty part of your thumb
  • 1 tablespoon– tip of your thumb
  • 1-2 ounces of a snack food– your hand cupped
  • 3 ounces of meat– palm of your hand

Obviously these are estimations and are not going to be %100 accurate. After all, everyone has different size hands.  But this is still a good place to start when it comes to estimating. Next time you are not able to weigh your food, try using your hands to estimate your portions. Also, for more detailed list on estimation sizes, check out this website.
